Voters in New Jersey, Arizona, Montana, and South Dakota voted to legalize the recreational use of cannabis on Tuesday.
According to NJ.com, nearly 60% of New Jersey voters supported the amendment to make cannabis, a drug available for recreational use. Voters of Arizona came to a similar conclusion this past Tuesday. Along with the vote to make cannabis a recreational drug, the state will also implement the process of allowing past convictions to petition criminal records of drug possession.
Buzzfeed reported that South Dakota and Montana also passed both recreational and medical cannabis initiatives during the election.
With New Jersey joining the ranks to build laws and taxes around the drug, there’s mounting pressure on nearby states. Including Pennsylvania and New York to follow suit. New Jersey, Arizona, South Dakota, and Montana has become the 12th state this election to make weed recreationally legal. Law-makers of the four states mentioned will be evolving tax rules for cannabis sales statewide.
In Oregon, voters also decided whether to decriminalize all drugs, including the use of cocaine and heroin.
